Located on Omar al-Mukhtar Street in the heart of Gaza City, the Shorouq building is one of the oldest tower blocks in the coastal strip and one of its most famous landmarks. Built in 1995, it houses multiple TV channels and media offices, and a popular saying is that every journalist in Gaza has spent time in the building at one point.
The tower’s architecture is influenced by soviet architecture, which is represented in the monotone building color, blocky and geometric form. The elevation was divided into four parts by vertical concrete slabs. The soviet architecture is popular in the region due to its ease of implementation and low cost.
The occupation hit the tower several times before destroying it completely in May 2021. The 2021 raid was characterized by targeting media offices located in Gaza’s tallest towers.
